How to best adapt to this new trend? We’ve put together some tips to help you be in your element during an online interview.
The alpha and omega of every interview is preparation, and this is especially true for online interviews. It is necessary to prepare not only mentally and in terms of knowledge, but also technically. You have to think ahead about things you wouldn’t normally think about. But there’s no need to worry, as you’ll see below.
Place and equipment
- Find the quietest place where you won’t be disturbed by your family or your drilling neighbour and where you can get the best connection.
- Turn off notifications on both your PC and phone. Don’t be tempted by Facebook or e-mails. It will be easy to see on camera if you’re distracted by something.
- Prepare the software you will use for the call. If you don’t know it well, feel free to try it with a friend or call a family member beforehand. They will appreciate it you will kill two birds with one stone.
- Position the camera, taking into account the light source, so that you can see your face clearly; the camera should be in front of you, not in profile. If you normally use multiple monitors, make sure you have your camera on the same monitor as your meeting application window.
Have a backup plan ready
- In case your PC doesn’t work, prepare your tablet or phone and don't forget to turn on mobile data.
- Have another contact details for the interviewer (phone, e-mail) available so you can contact them if anything goes wrong.
My equipment is set, now how should I prepare?
Although the domestic atmosphere might make it a little tempting, don’t underestimate your clothes. There’s no need to sit at home in a jacket, tie and polished shoes. Gentlemen, you can’t go wrong with an ironed long-sleeved shirt. Ladies, a simple blouse or dress with sleeves will be perfect.
Write down questions about the working environment, the atmosphere in the workplace, the amenities in the surrounding area. These are things you could see for yourself during a face-to-face interview, but you have to ask about them in this case. Feel free to ask about parking options.
Take advantage of being in familiar surroundings and just relax and let yourself be at ease. And don’t forget to smile, it improves everything.
Two golden rules to conclude:
- Always wait 1 second before answering. If the connection is not ideal, the other person will be able to hear the beginning of the answer.
- Maintain eye contact. It will make the online interview more natural and create a more personal atmosphere.
